Outward Adornments

My daughter Faith just skipped excitedly into my room.  The light in her eyes and the height of her skip was something to behold.  She said, “Mommy look at my hair!!  Its straight!  Isn’t it beautiful??”
Then she started sprinting from one side of the room to the other and in between her breathes for air she was yelling,”I …wonder…what…my…hair…looks…like…now…when…it…blows…in…the…wind?!?”  What I would give for a dash of her utter glee at such a seemingly small thing. Her prancing got me thinking. FaithHair2 FaithHair1 When I look at my daughter (all of my children) I see living examples of what Jesus meant when he said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”  Matthew 19:14.  Her heart is pure innocence.  Unhindered by stress, worry, or fear of what others think.  She has unwavering faith in the God who created her and her definition of what is beautiful is not tied down to anything.  In fact some mornings she comes twirling into my room in a multi colored multi patterned twirly skirt with winter boots and a football jersey and says “I’m ready for school!”
Her looks, her clothes, her colors…they bring her so many smiles.  Such joy!  At what point do we lose this?  Is it possible to save it?  Can we ever go back to that place?
I need to stew on these questions for a little while.  Afterall, the very purpose of why I write it because I believe in the hope of something greater than the way it is today.  I believe in regaining the joy that has been lost in the name of looks, insecurity, poor body image…
In the meantime, let’s have a little more of this:
